He is a 23-time Lifetime Award of Excellence (Diamond) recipient; fewer than 1 percent of Nashville Realtors receive this distinction from the Greater Nashville Realtors.

He is an Accredited Buyer Representative (ABR), a Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), and a Certified Real Estate Brokerage Manager (CRB).

Richard's top-selling real estate guide, Buyers are Liars & Sellers are Too!, The Truth About Buying or Selling Your Home, was published by Simon & Schuster.

For the past 14 years, Richard has served as the weekly real estate columnist for the Nashville Ledger, for which he won a first-place Tennessee State Press Award for best business coverage. He also has served as a contributing writer for The Tennessean, the Nashville Scene, The City Paper, InReview and a wide range of industry and professional publications.

In 2021, Richard and Realtor Lisa Peebles formed Courtney & Peebles Property Group. They and their team of agents have expanded their scope of services throughout the Greater Nashville market.

Richard lives in Nashville with wife Beth Seigenthaler Courtney, their children, Adeline and Tom, and two dogs. A native of Columbia, Tennessee, he is an alumnus of University of the South in Sewanee (1977) and Columbia Military Academy (1973). Richard is also the founder and chair of Nashville Beatles Festival.
