NASHVILLE — July 31, 2003 — The National Association of Realtors has appointed Richard Courtney federal district coordinator assigned to Congressman Jim Cooper, announced Rob Broome, director of governmental affairs for the Tennessee Association of Realtors®. The TAR nominated Courtney for this volunteer leadership position.

Courtney will serve as a liaison to Congressman Cooper to assist him with projects where the professional Realtor community can be of service, including legislative issues that impact the industry as well as community-based programs that support home ownership.

"Richard Courtney is someone I trust and rely on for knowledge of the realty industry, and I appreciate the leadership and expertise he will provide on behalf of the NAR and TAR," said Cooper.  "I've worked closely with Richard on a bill I am co-sponsoring, the Community Choice in Real Estate Act, which prohibits banking conglomerates from entering the real estate business. And I look forward to working with Richard, the TAR and others to assure the availability of affordable housing and homeowners insurance to the citizens of Cheatham, Davidson and Wilson Counties."

Courtney is a 25-year real estate veteran and a broker at Fridrich & Clark Realty LLC and serves as director of Fridrich & Clark’s recently established affordable housing division.  He is on the board of directors of both the Greater Nashville Association of Realtors and the Tennessee Association of Realtors, and he serves as chairman of the GNAR Affordable Housing Committee. Courtney has been awarded GNAR’s Gold Lifetime Award of Excellence, was chairman of the GNAR RPAC Committee, RPAC trustee for TAR, and is a graduate of the inaugural class of Leadership GNAR.  He has provided expert real estate commentary for Nashville print and electronic media and received national acclaim for his book, “Buyers Are Liars And Sellers Are Too.”  Courtney is the real estate columnist for The Nashville City Paper, authoring a weekly article on the residential real estate industry.

Courtney is the son of the late Robin and Lucille Courtney of Columbia.  He is 1973 graduate of Columbia Military Academy and he received his B.A. in English from University of the South in Sewanee. He and his wife, Beth Seigenthaler Courtney, live in Nashville.
